Showing and telling in speech therapy

This week I have been exploring using PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) to target some functional and relevant speech for an autistic young person.

PROMPT is a very different technique to typical SLT approaches. It is "hands-on" with the therapist physically providing information to the articulators on how to move. It looks at the speech production system in a very different way to traditional SLT. Not dissimilar to my experiences of physio where the physiotherapist guides you to the target posture/ movement - not just "telling" you what to do. Show AND tell. This video tells you more about the approach.

This week I have worked on "yes" and "poo". Both are functional, everyday words relevant that help to get things done/get you to the right place at the right time. PROMPT fascinates me and makes complete sense in developing the speech of some young people.

Going from NO vocal communication for "yes" to an emerging 'ye' and the hint of an 's' was great to see within the session. PROMPT seemed to be a great start in this young person knowing how to move their mouth in ways they had not moved it before.

Fun in equal measure was the Doggie Doo game - always a winner and a very good activity for a target word of Poo. And as a puppy owner myself a much used word in my house!!

Looking forward to seeing where we go next.
